Street Food in Bari: Walking Tour or Bike Tour – Which One?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read
Bari is a good city to eat in without sitting down. Most of what it is known for is sold from a bakery counter, a doorway or a paper bag, and most of it is in the old town, Bari Vecchia, within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
That makes a street food tour tempting and also a little unnecessary. This guide compares the guided options and says plainly what you can do without one.
What you will be eating
- Focaccia barese, a thick, oily bread topped with tomatoes and olives. Bakers in Bari work boiled potato into the dough, which is what keeps the inside soft while the crust crisps.
- Panzerotti, small fried pockets of dough, classically filled with tomato and mozzarella.
- Sgagliozze, slices of fried polenta, salted and served hot in a paper bag.
- Orecchiette, the ear-shaped pasta that women still shape by hand in the lanes around Arco Basso. That is a stop on many tours, rather than a thing you eat in the street.

Walking or bike?
If food is the point, walk. The 2.5-hour street food walking tour has the most reviews of any food walk, 838, with a 4.9 rating that it shares with the Ultimate tour, and it is the cheapest of the three food walks. The two three-hour tours at about €48 cost more and run half an hour longer. The listing for the Ultimate tour names an octopus sandwich, which the cheaper tour does not mention, and that may decide it for you; the Original tour is rated lower at 4.6.
The bike tour is a sightseeing tour with a tasting, not a meal. Its listing describes city highlights and lesser-known corners, the old town and the castle, and says “local tasting” without saying how much you eat. It has 633 reviews at 4.5 and costs €37. Take it if you want to cover more ground in two hours. If you arrive hungry, ask the operator what the tasting consists of before you book.
The Segway tour costs almost three times the walking tour. At €119 it is the most expensive option, with 42 reviews. It suits people who want the Segway; as a way to eat, it is not better value than a walk.
The sunset tasting is the one with fried seafood. It has only 30 reviews, so the 4.8 rests on little evidence, but it is the only listing that puts fried seafood and a sunset walk on the same route.
Read the booking page for the meeting point and for what the price includes, since the listing descriptions are short. If you have a food allergy or follow a diet, ask the operator before you book; the listings do not say how they handle it.
Eating on your own
You can build a similar route for a few euros.
- Fried polenta and focaccia. Sgagliozze are sold from small stands in Bari Vecchia, for example around Largo Albicocca. A paper bag is reported to cost a euro or two. Focaccia is sold by the slice from the bakeries near the Basilica of San Nicola.
- Raw seafood by the harbour. In the mornings, fishermen sell octopus, sea urchins and other raw shellfish on the quay at Molo San Nicola, next to the Teatro Margherita, and locals eat it on the spot. It is a morning habit; stalls are said to pack up by early afternoon. Whether raw seafood suits you is your call.
What a tour adds is the order and the introductions: someone who knows which bakery is open and what to order. If you like to wander and point, you do not need it.
