Castel del Monte, Trani and Altamura from Bari: One Bus Day or Your Own Route?
Updated October 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Castel del Monte is the least convenient of the famous sights near Bari and, for that reason, the one most often left off the list. It stands alone on a hill in the Murge countryside, inland from the coast, built by the Emperor Frederick II on an octagonal plan with eight octagonal towers. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The same direction takes you through three other places worth the trip: the cathedral on the seafront at Trani, the bread town of Altamura and the ravine at Gravina in Puglia. The question is whether to see them with a tour or stitch them together yourself.
Why this one needs a plan
The castle is not in a town. From Andria, the nearest town, there are only a few buses, so check the current timetable before counting on them. A taxi from there will be expensive. That is why almost every visitor arrives by car, tour bus or minivan.
Opening times and the standard ticket price are set by the museum authority and change by season, so look at the current figures on the official site before you plan around them. The skip-the-line ticket is the only price we can show you here: it is listed at €12.
The day trip that covers four places
The day tour by bus from Bari to Castel del Monte, Altamura, Gravina and Trani is €48.75 per person, ten hours, with 4.7 stars from 163 reviews. The listing promises canyons, “rock history”, cathedrals and “authentic flavors”, with a stop at Castel del Monte.
Ten hours across four stops is a lot of driving. The honest reading is that this is a sampler: you will see each place, but you will not linger. The listing does not say how long the castle stop lasts or whether you go inside, so check the booking page for the schedule before you decide.
The other ways in
| Option | Price | Length | Rating | Reviews | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day tour by bus | €48.75 | 10 hours | 4.7 | 163 | Four stops from Bari |
| Castel del Monte skip-the-line ticket | €12 | – | 4.3 | 188 | Entry only; you get yourself there |
| Guided tour of Castel del Monte with entry | €20 | 1 hour | 4.6 | 40 | A local guide inside the castle; you get yourself there |
| Organised tour from Bari to Castel del Monte | €145 | 5 hours | 4.7 | 12 | Guided, by minivan from Bari |
| Castel del Monte and Trani small-group day trip | €179 | 6.5 hours | 5.0 | 2 | Small group, the castle and Trani |
The last two are expensive and thinly reviewed – 12 and 2 reviews – so their ratings tell you little. Their advantage is time: the minivan trip is listed at five hours and the small-group trip at 6.5, against ten for the bus.
Which one
- First time, one day, not driving: the €48.75 bus day. It is the cheapest option here with transport included, and the only one that adds Trani, Altamura and Gravina.
- The castle is the point: if you have a car, buy the €12 ticket and add the one-hour guide at €20 if you want it explained. The two listings sell different things, so check which one you want.
- No car and short on time: the €145 minivan, if the price is bearable.
If you drive
Castel del Monte rewards a car. You can pair it with Trani and its cathedral by the sea, which is an easy afternoon, and you set your own hours. If that suits you, compare car hire for Bari, and check parking and opening hours at the castle before you set out.
