Alberobello and Matera from Bari in One Day: Which Day Trip Is Worth It?

Alberobello and Matera are the two places people ask about first when they land in Bari. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites, both sit roughly an hour’s drive from the city, and a whole group of coach tours sells them as one long day.

The tours look almost identical in the listings. They are not, and the differences are mostly about who is with you in Matera and how many hours you actually spend walking.

What one day really contains

Every option we looked at runs nine to ten hours. Take away the driving – Bari to Alberobello is a drive of roughly an hour, Alberobello to Matera another hour or so, and the way back to Bari about the same again – and you are left with something like three hours in each town.

That is enough for a first look at both. It is not enough to do either properly. If you can only pick one, the better question is the one covered in our guide to Matera from Bari by bus, train or tour.

Alberobello: a small place that fills up fast

Alberobello is known for its trulli, the dry-stone houses with conical grey roofs. The two districts to know are Rione Monti, the hillside with the shops and the crowds, and Aia Piccola, which is quieter and still largely residential. Together they hold roughly fifteen hundred trulli.

Rione Monti is compact enough to walk in a short loop, so the time on the clock matters less than the hour you arrive. A coach that reaches the town at midday meets every other coach. The listings rarely say which town comes first, so ask the operator before you book.

Matera: the part that needs a guide

Matera is the opposite of Alberobello. The Sassi – Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso – are cave dwellings and rock-cut churches stacked down a ravine, and they are steep, uneven and easy to get lost in. Wear shoes you can climb stairs in. Most of the story is invisible unless someone tells it.

This is why the single biggest difference between the tours is the Matera guide.

The five options, side by side

All prices are per person and, like the review counts, come from GetYourGuide. Bus, guide and entry details differ by option and date, so read the inclusions on the booking page before you pay.

Reading between the lines

“Tour leader” is not “guide”. One of the tours uses that word, and others on the booking site do too. A tour leader keeps the group and the timetable together; the listing describes the visits as self-guided. If you want Matera explained, look for the tour that names a certified or local guide.

The cheapest and the most reviewed are different tours. The most booked option has 5,799 reviews at 4.7 stars, far more than any other. It is also the one where the price depends on the option you choose, so check which version you are looking at before you compare it to the €34 or the €51.35 ones.

The €85.50 tour is not twice as good. It is the dearest on the list and the least reviewed. Whether a smaller or more comfortable group justifies that is for you to decide, but the listing does not claim more time in the towns.

Which one for whom

  • First visit, light budget: the most booked private-bus tour, in the guided version if Matera matters to you.
  • You want the story of the Sassi: the one with a certified guide in Matera, at €51.35.
  • You like walking, not lectures: the self-guided tour with a tour leader, at €40.30.

Or drive yourself

If you want to stay in Matera until the evening light or spend a slow morning in Alberobello, the coach will not give you that. Both towns are easy to reach by car, and it is worth comparing car hire for Bari, especially for two or more people sharing one car. Parking in the old centres is limited, so check where your accommodation or the car park is before you commit.
